Quick wins before you renovate

  1. Close the leaks. Sound loves gaps. Door sweeps, weatherstripping, and outlet/window caulk often beat expensive panels on bare walls.
  2. Treat the sleeping room first. One quiet bedroom changes quality of life more than average improvements everywhere.
  3. Add mass soft goods. Heavy curtains and rugs reduce reflected sound indoors so residual noise feels less harsh.
  4. Mask, don’t mythologize. White noise and fans do not soundproof; they raise the floor so intermittent peaks and rumble are less attention-grabbing.
  5. Earplugs for peaks. Keep soft sleep plugs for exhaust events while you work the civic path.
Skip “miracle foam tiles on the ceiling” as your first spend — they absorb echo inside the room; they do not block highway energy coming through glass.
