Complaints, bylaws, and highways

This continues the original Stop Road Noise focus on community standards — expanded with the highway path.

Loud exhausts & modified mufflers

  1. Identify the enforcing body (police, bylaw, municipal standards).
  2. Log date, time, location, direction, plate if safe, and how it affected sleep.
  3. Write a short factual complaint citing the local exhaust/noise ordinance if you can find it.
  4. Recruit neighbors; shared logs get faster attention.

Highway & arterial traffic

Continuous tire/engine noise is usually not a police matter. Ask your city transportation department or state DOT about:

  • Existing noise studies and Noise Abatement Criteria
  • Whether a barrier was evaluated (in the U.S., federal-aid projects follow procedures akin to 23 CFR 772)
  • Surface, speed, or truck-route changes that might help
Barriers typically need line-of-sight blockage and resident support; vegetation alone rarely equals a wall. A 5–10 dB drop is a common successful-barrier range — meaningful, not magical.
